Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based channel in which a brand pays third-party publishers (affiliates) a commission for each sale, lead, or other specified action they drive. The affiliate promotes the brand through their own channels, such as a website, email list, or social media presence, and earns a fee only when a tracked conversion occurs.

How Affiliate Marketing Works

Affiliate programs operate through a tracking infrastructure that attributes conversions to the correct publisher. When a visitor clicks an affiliate’s unique tracking link, a cookie is placed on their browser. If that visitor completes a qualifying action within the cookie window (commonly 30 to 90 days), the affiliate receives credit and is paid the agreed commission. Affiliate networks such as ShareASale, CJ Affiliate, and Rakuten Advertising host programs from many brands and provide publishers with a centralized place to apply to programs, access creative assets, and track earnings. Brands can also run in-house affiliate programs using software such as Impact, PartnerStack, or Refersion to maintain more control over terms and publisher relationships.

Commission structures vary by program and objective. Revenue share, where the affiliate earns a percentage of each sale, is standard in e-commerce and subscription programs. Cost-per-lead programs pay a flat fee for each qualified lead form submission, phone call, or trial sign-up. Hybrid models combine a lower revenue share with a flat base payment per conversion. The commission rate must be high enough to attract quality publishers while keeping the total affiliate cost below the channel’s customer acquisition cost target.

Affiliate Program Management

Running an effective affiliate program requires ongoing publisher recruitment, relationship management, and compliance monitoring. Recruitment involves identifying content creators, review sites, coupon and cashback sites, and comparison platforms whose audiences align with the brand’s target customer and whose promotional methods are consistent with brand standards. Onboarding new affiliates with clear guidelines about permitted promotional tactics, restricted keywords (such as branded search terms), and disclosure requirements reduces compliance risk and sets expectations for the relationship. Active affiliates should receive regular communications about new offers, seasonal promotions, and creative refreshes to keep them engaged and producing current content.

Compliance monitoring is a persistent challenge in affiliate marketing. Incentive abuse, cookie stuffing, trademark bidding on paid search, and undisclosed promotion are tactics that can inflate reported conversions without generating genuine incremental revenue. Programs should audit affiliate traffic sources, review landing page and ad creative used by publishers, and use anomaly detection on conversion rates to identify suspicious affiliate activity before it distorts program economics. The FTC requires that affiliates disclose their material connection to brands in any promotional content, and programs are responsible for ensuring publishers in their network comply with this requirement.

Measuring Affiliate Program Performance

Key affiliate program metrics include total revenue sourced from affiliates, revenue per affiliate, commission payout as a percentage of affiliate revenue, number of active affiliates, and conversion rate by traffic source. Incrementality testing, which compares sales among consumers exposed to affiliate promotions against a matched control group, is the most rigorous method for determining how much affiliate-attributed revenue represents genuinely new demand versus purchases that would have occurred without the affiliate touchpoint.

Organizations that approach this discipline with clearly defined objectives, measurable success criteria, and a structured review cadence consistently outperform those that treat it as a tactical activity without strategic context. Establishing baseline metrics before launch, reviewing performance against those baselines on a regular schedule, and documenting lessons learned after each campaign cycle creates a foundation for continuous improvement that compounds over time. This approach builds institutional knowledge that persists even as team members change and market conditions shift in ways that require program adaptation.

Regular reporting and review cadences transform individual metrics into strategic intelligence. A metric reviewed in isolation tells a limited story. The same metric reviewed alongside related indicators, segmented by audience or channel, and compared to prior periods reveals patterns that inform decisions about where to allocate budget and which creative or offer approaches to scale. Marketing teams that build this analytical discipline into their operating rhythm consistently outperform those that review metrics only when performance problems have become severe enough to trigger concern from leadership.
